After Xamax had played the relegation round in 1997, fundamental changes were made six months later. Coach Gilbert Gress, who had taken over the national team in the meantime, was replaced by the 112 times international Alain Geiger. The three Africans Seyni N'Diaye, Joseph Ndo and Pierre Njanka, the Spaniard Xavier Molist and the former international Yvan Quentin rang in a new era on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel. In the fall of 1998, Xamax reached the final round without any problems, but the fight for a berth in a European Competition was over early for the club of the charismatic and charming president Gilbert Facchinetti. Due to their difficult financial situation, they were licenced for the upcoming season only at second instance. These changes in the squad were not motivated by the idea of strengthening the team, but by financial considerations. Ndo und Njanka from Cameroon signed with Racing Strasbourg. The leading goal scorer Patrick Isabella went to France, too, while sweeper Martin Rueda retired after a long career. -ba
Nach Xamax' Sturz in die Abstiegsrunde anno 1997 herrschte in Neuenburg sechs Monate später Aufbruchstimmung. Gilbert Gress, unterdessen Schweizer Nationalcoach, wurde als Trainer durch den 112fachen Internationalen Alain Geiger ersetzt. Mit den drei Afrikanern Seyni N'Diaye, Joseph Ndo und Pierre Njanka, dem Spanier Xavier Molist, aber auch dem Ex-Nationalspieler Yvan Quentin brach man am Neuenburger See zu neuen Ufern auf. Im Herbst 1998 erreichte Xamax die Finalrunde der besten acht Teams souverän. Im Kampf um die Europacup-Plätze schied der Verein des charismatischen und charmanten Präsidenten Gilbert Facchinetti jedoch früh aus. Wegen der angespannten Finanzlage erhielt Xamax von der Nationalliga erst in zweiter Instanz die Spiellizenz für nächste Saison. Die erneuten Mutationen in diesem Sommer waren deshalb nicht zur Stärkung des Kaders gedacht. Die Kameruner Ndo und Njanka unterzeichneten Verträge bei Racing Strasbourg. Auch Topskorer Patrick Isabella zog es weg, und der langjährige Libero Martin Rueda beendete seine Aktivlaufbahn. -sw
